Watermelon

Well, I can honestly say that I am learning something from the drawings that I have been doing. My drawings generally have a light touch and my paintings are much more encumbered. I started this painting 5 times before I felt that I was on the right path. I am working on a very smooth linen canvas which I don't like that much, but since I bought 3 boxes of them, I will be using them up. Who knows maybe I will learn to love them. The surface takes a lighter application of paint because the thicker paint just slips and slides around. I actually liked the feeling of less paint and how much more I could work it. I can get the desired soft edges and create a bit of atmosphere.

Watermelon Day10
My still life met with a fateful end...my dog, Stella, ate my watermeon when I briefly left the room. She was careful to eat only the melon and not the rind! So, this still life is completed.

Your colors are great in this. The complements of red and green in the watermelon are a given, but the way you used various values of the purple and yellow families of color in the plate and background is beautiful.
Your color sense and use of light are beautiful in this, as in all your paintings! I also enjoy seeing your drawings --- you're inspiring me to start drawing again as well. Thanks so much for your comment on my blog . . .

This is lovely! I like the shades of lavenders and purples as the background. It looks gorgeous with the red and smidges of green. Wonderful!

I didn't know a dog would eat watermelon! Ours eat anything baked. Pies, cakes, even a whole gingerbread house once!

P.S. Thanks for visiting and commenting. It means a lot!

Your color red! I will have one of these paintings one day!
Beautiful painting! As everyone has already mentioned, the colours and paint application are so enticing. Too bad about the dog eating the watermelon. At least if you really needed to you could get another melon...one pretty much looks like another fortunately. I'd say this piece is done, though...don't put another stroke on it. It's perfect.

Lovely painting, Linda . . . everything about it is wonderful. It's a good thing you were able to finish before Stella ate the watermelon. My dog would have done the same thing!

The colors here are wonderful! Yes, we all need to draw more and you are inspiring us. Thanks for that!!
Beautiful colors in this painting. I know what you mean about drawing...we can seem to do nice spontaneous sketches, and then overowork a painting. I have never used linen and didn't realize it was so smooth. You have certainly achieved the looser feel, your strokes are great and I love that touch of green on the peel
