Rose VIII

Cocktail and Pink Himalayan Salt

I have included the initial layout of the drawing with the values being placed.  In the second listing I am beginning to lay in where the darkest darks will be and where the middle values will be and then where the lightest values are put in.  It was critically important that I work with only a few colors.  I chose cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, emerald green, and titanium white.  This gave the the most beautiful gray violets and pinks.  The reds were vibrant and intense.  It was tricky making the ice.  The umbrella had to be drawn very carefully because it led to the focal point.  The second focal  was the pink salt shaker.  All in all I am very pleased with the painting.  It has a nice value structure which you can see in the last entry.

Reworked paintings

Firecracker!

I had fun with this painting today....still trying out the water soluble oil paints...not sure how I feel about them....clean up is easy though!

Roses

New work.....'Roses'....10"x 8"x 3/4"....oil....stretched cotton canvas.....I just want to tell you that I have been taking the most amazing workshop....'The Secrets of Painting Light' with  Dennis Perrin .......I have learned so much in such a short period of time that it is almost breathtaking....he has many more virtual workshops too...

Roses and Lemons

I learned so much from this painting...it felt like this was what I have been looking for a long time.  I loved painting this and had so much fun.  There were all kinds of decisions to be made with every brush stroke....I simply loved it.  I have learned so much from Dennis Parrin's 'The Secrets of Painting Light' online workshop.  Just wonderful information.....it will change you for the better....

Hybiscus

This is a 6 inch square painting........

Whisper of Spring

This is a copy of a photograph that I saw on FB.  I wanted to give credit to Beautiful Dreamers's Photography.  I generally never copy....but this just touched my soul.

Papaya and Posies

Look familiar?  Yeah I couldn't stand the other painting as I was trying something that just didn't quite work out.  I am more comfortable with the changes that I have made.....

Old English Rose

I have worked and worked on this piece and now feel that it is complete....the problem was the Thalo Blue that I used in the background...I just couldn't get rid of it and it was distracting.  I had work really hard to get rid of it......I am satisfied now.  But, I will strive for a little warmer background in the future.

Old English Roses

Well, this was a really fun painting.....

Purple Pink Peonies

This is a re-do of sorts.   I have been looking at the work of Ray Roberts and others on Facebook and am learning more about the direction that I wish to go with my work....this is a result of that looking and analyzing.  I am extremely happy with the results......

My Treasures II

Once again I will need to photograph in the daylight because the colors aren't as intense as they are in true to life.  I really cut loose with this painting.  I focused once again on my 'treasures'....my stash of still life objects to paint.  I kind of enjoy this because I don't have to compose a story....I like things to be quite natural.  With this it is about the objects...their relationships to one another...color....interaction.....It is about letting my feelings come through the painting.  I am either going in the wrong direction or in the right direction....I think I will just need to weather this one through.

My Treasure

I have a treasure trove of props for my still life compositions.  I decided to just paint them as they are stacked next to one another on the top shelf....such fun!!!  This will be a series....more to come!!

Rose at Dawn

I am learning how to use paint.net and hope that I am understanding...anyway this is an painting that I painted today....love what I am learning!!  I also bought bristle brushes which make a big difference in how the paint handles.  There are places and reasons to use synthetic brushes...they make a very chiseled application of paint whereas a bristle brush is soft and gives a soft diffused edge.

Red Vase and Lemons

Finally folks, I have a painting.....I am overjoyed that I hung in there with this one.  I have learned so much about color as value and the introduction of grays.  My composition was just not working until I added a few more lemons and involved the foreground of the painting.  There were tears of utter frustration until I made break through after break through.  I am finally excited about painting again.  What have I learned?  Patience, persistence, looking, studying, analyzing, tenacity and willingness to leave what works and move on...... Oh......the painting is 20"x 20" on stretched canvas
