This was a dream to paint...I used a palette of cad yellow med, vermilion red, turquoise blue, sap green, and alizarin crimson, titanium white with naples yellow added.
This is a 7"x 5" oil painted on Gessobord. I used a controlled palette of Alizarin Crimson, Cad Red Med, Ivory Black, Naples Yellow, and Titanium White. I did mix my red with a bit of Cad Orange. My apple melted under the bright light.....the candy just slumped off.....:)
I enjoyed this painting and once again I need to photograph under natural lighting tomorrow morning. The palette that I used was Cerulean Blue, Cad Orange, Cad Yellow Lt., Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Ivory Black, and Naples Yellow.
I am very dissatisfied with my landscapes and need to explore just what is going on with them. I think that I may need to actually do some plein air work to understand......anyway I am letting this one rest......
What drew me to want to paint this particular still life was the lemongrass body crème and the silver and gold nail polish. I then added the loose powder which became the focus of the painting. In this painting I wanted to use shades of gray and achieve as subtle color as I possibly could; thereby still having plenty of color and light. I worked this painting perhaps more than I desired, but I think it still has a fresh quality to it. I realize that the initial layout of a painting is crucial and an area where I need tons of work. I don't know why it is such a challenge for me. I need to get away of thinking object and concentrate more on shapes in the beginning. Anybody have any helpful suggestions?
This little 6"x 8" oil painting is painted on Gessobord. I have had much time to think and rethink my painting strategy and I am simplifying the number of my strokes and working on lost and found edges. What I love about this painting are the number of interrelated colors and how they support one another. I like the active surface. I have been spending much time looking at the Impressionists and works of contemporary impressionist artists while I was without a computer. I would say that much of the work I have been doing has been in my mind. As much as I love color I am also aware that grays help to hold a painting together and make the other colors pop. In this painting I tried to incorporate warm and cool grays. Putting all of these things together is challenging.
Gouache is a medium that I have grown very fond of....I love the clarity and purity of color. This small 5x7 inch painting is done on hot press watercolor paper. Edisto Beach is where we go every Thanksgiving. This is one of the many salt marshes that line the drive to the beach. You can see the fall colors of the grasses in the marsh.
This is a photograph that my husband took while kayaking in one of the salt marshes surrounding our home. What fun it was to paint. It is small....only 5"x 7" on hot press watercolor paper.
Image size 5 1/2"x 7" Gouache Mixed Media Paper This is the 6th still life painting in an ongoing series of gouache paintings. I found this wonderful old depression glass bowl at one of my favorite thrift stores this past weekend. I admire the color of the glass when the light filters through it. It is truly lovely!! I am beginning to get a nice feel for the medium and love to use it. My one day workshop is rapidly approaching...if you are interested and would like to join me please go here .
A self portrait on a 5"x7" Gessobord panel done with oils. I want to give a heartfelt shout out to Taryn Day for her guidance (on her blog) as to how to paint the figure. She suggest turning the painting and photo upside down and it really did make it possible to get a better likeness. Quite remarkable actually. Thank you!!!!
OK so its Valentine candy that is on my mind...I have vowed not to eat it just to paint it or toss it out. This little 5"x7" painting is painted with gouache paints. I enjoyed this little painting. Oh by the way, the dollar store had so many items that could be used for still life material...and inexpensive!
