Cocktail and Pink Himalayan Salt

I have included the initial layout of the drawing with the values being placed.  In the second listing I am beginning to lay in where the darkest darks will be and where the middle values will be and then where the lightest values are put in.  It was critically important that I work with only a few colors.  I chose cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, emerald green, and titanium white.  This gave the the most beautiful gray violets and pinks.  The reds were vibrant and intense.  It was tricky making the ice.  The umbrella had to be drawn very carefully because it led to the focal point.  The second focal  was the pink salt shaker.  All in all I am very pleased with the painting.  It has a nice value structure which you can see in the last entry.

Blue Vase and Purple Plums.....Procreate paintings

I love the app Procreate and am learning many wonderful things.

Red Shoes

Graphite drawing.....14"x 11".....mixed media paper

New work

Roses and Lemons

I learned so much from this painting...it felt like this was what I have been looking for a long time.  I loved painting this and had so much fun.  There were all kinds of decisions to be made with every brush stroke....I simply loved it.  I have learned so much from Dennis Parrin's 'The Secrets of Painting Light' online workshop.  Just wonderful information.....it will change you for the better....

Red Tulips

I am taking a wonderful class on LIGHT from Dennis Perrin and I must tell you it is phenomenal.  This is my first painting using his method.  It was harder than it should have been because I chose tulips which changed position over night.  I had a wonderful drawing all laid out and the next morning....wallla....it was completely different...so very frustrating!!!!!!!  But hey, I have learned a ton!!!

Radishes

This oil painting is 6x6 inches on Gessobord.....finally getting back to painting after the loss of my dog.  It just takes time!!  Wishing you all a joyous season as we go through the coming days....

My Treasure

I have a treasure trove of props for my still life compositions.  I decided to just paint them as they are stacked next to one another on the top shelf....such fun!!!  This will be a series....more to come!!

Red Roses in Glass

This is a 9"x 12" oil painting on stretched canvas with thick buttery paint.  The colors are not quite right.....but close.  I may have to have my husband do a callibration on the colors of the monitor.  The painting will be for sale in my Etsy shop.

Candy

I painted this portrait of my sister when she was just a little girl.  Pleased with the way it turned out... Portraiture is not something that I do often even though I truly enjoy it.  Our grandmother took this photo in the 'rose gardens' in Portland, Oregon many years ago.  We used to go there every summer when she visited us.  Those are fond memories....

Rockin' Radishes

Oh these were fun to paint.  I am still gleaning a great deal of information from my Putnam DVD and this prompted me to work on this painting quickly and decisively.  I sometimes get lost in the desire to paint every little thing and so my quest is to leave a little bit more to the imagination of the viewer.  I felt that this painting was successful in that area.  I did a thumbnail sketch which is something that is stressed in her book and DVD.  It just helps to get a desirable Notan down before painting.  I feel that I am learning a lot even if I walk backwards sometimes.  (As in yesterday's painting)

Red Wedges

My latest Thrift Store find.  These great red shoes are also very comfortable!  Enjoyed painting them even though it was a challenge to get the harmony just right.  I chose Cad Red Deep, Cad Yellow Deep, Ultra Blue, and Permanent Green Deep along with Titanium White.  Kind of strange palette.  I like the results.  Oh and I did add a little bit of Violet.  The drawing part was the key to its success and I had to work mightily to achieve it!!  Perseverance.......

Tulips

While I was looking through my reference photos this morning these pretty red tulips caught my eye.  What I learned from my abstract work is still with me.  I have to admit that I love painting images as well.  I feel that working abstractly forces you to work quickly and with energy.  I began to tighten up and wiped off a couple of times.  Then I used my red viewfinder to correct values and my mirror to really size up the composition.  Then drawing a deep breath I dove in.......

Big Droopy Peony

I revisited this image and had fun with fewer strokes and more measured and thoughtful procedure.

Red Rose

Working on gesture today...total wipeout several times until I just gave into letting it happen with thought...if that makes any sense.

Two new (old) paintings....

These are two paintings that I have been working on for sometime.  I feel that I am finally tying all of the ends together and heading down a path that I have wanted for a long time.  I have been soul searching over the past 2 or 3 weeks and now I feel that after a break from painting I am ready to dive in.  The top painting is 'Olives', 6"X 6", Oil on board.  The bottom painting is 'Sunflowers', 10"X 8", Oil on stretched canvas.  Both of these paintings will be in a state of limbo as they dry and when thoroughly dried placed in my Etsy shop.....be watching!

Small Tomatoes

4"X 6" Oil Linen Covered Board $90.00 Darn....I meant to follow this painting from layout to finish and I forgot!  Hopefully I will remember tomorrow.  My friend Jo MacKenzie told me of a great site that allows you to paint the photographs that the members post.  This was from a very talented photographer on site.  Setting up a still life is still one of my biggest challenges.

Broccoli.....Day 21

6"X 6" Oil Ampersand Gessobord My submission for Day 21 in the 30 paintings in 30 day challenge is Broccoli!  This was a very fun painting to paint!  I find it easier to walk more fully in abstraction which is where I want to wander.  I have developed a nice system for my preliminary drawing and under painting which I will show you by way of video hopefully in my next painting.  This painting can be found here .

Green grapes on Red Plate

6"X 6" Oil Ampersand Gessobord $100.00 What is the lesson about color?  You may have a set up with specific colors but they are merely color notes that can be changed as the painting progresses.  I work process which is the way that I painted when I was working purely abstractly.  In that progression colors are added and removed until the painting looks and feels right.  In this painting I was attracted to the color of the grapes and that is how I built the composition.  The translucent of the grapes just drew me right in and gave me a reason to paint.  It is a little like love at first sight. This is my submission to Day 18 of the 30 in 30 challenge.  This painting can be found here .
8"X 8" Oil Canvas Panel $125.00 I bought these beets several days ago and needed to paint them because they were not going to last much longer.  Found Here
