This was a CHALLENGE....although fun....

This small 6"x 8" oil painting is painted on Gessobord.  I enjoyed the entire process from the notan to the finished stroke.  I concentrated my attention to my brushstrokes keeping them to a minimum.  It was an exercise in discipline. 

I am very dissatisfied with my landscapes and need to explore just what is going on with them.  I think that I may need to actually do some plein air work to understand......anyway I am letting this one rest......

Big post today....let's just say I saw the light!!!....hahaha.....simplify.....simplify.....simplify......my tendency is to get too caught in the weeds.....so yesterday was a day of clearer thinking and seeing!!

This little cityscape of the old Savannah theater is representative of the streets that line downtown Savannah Georgia.  I was lucky to be able to capture the scene with one of the touring trolleys right in front of the theater.

Well, folks....I will be out of a computer again for several weeks.  So I will post what I can until I don't have a way to do so.  This is an 8"x 10" oil on stretched canvas.  Low country scenes are always fun to paint.  My husband shot this image this past summer. I have learned that varying the size and direction and thickness of paint makes for a better, more interesting painting.  I achieved some of this in this painting, but I think it needs more variation.  So many things to think about while trying to keep it altogether. Still trying to find my balance...because I love brushwork I often use too much of it and my images appear graphic or like cut outs  I am working with this and trying to soften edges and provide more variety in my paintings.  Old habits are tough to break however so it is going to be difficult.  It is not meant to be a complaint only an assessment of where I am and where I would like to be and go. 

First of all I need to photograph this painting again because it has a glare on it. Having said that I am really pleased with this tiny 6"x 8" painting done in oil on Gessobord.  I worked from a photograph that my husband took of a salt marsh in Beaufort County.  I have learned so much from the Putnam DVD and like to listen to her speak when I am painting.  I find that I am always picking up another little tidbit of information.  One of the critical things that I learned was how important it is to have a variety of brushstrokes and in different directions.  It helps to make the painting more complex and interesting.  I also worked the color pushing the darks and finding a wide range of greens.  If you are familiar with Putnam's work you will find these elements in her work.  Painting is a combination of lots of thought and fun surprises.

Once every couple of years my husband and I take a day trip to Augusta, Georgia.  I am really not sure why we began this trek, but it is something that we enjoy.  There is a restaurant that we eat at and along the streets is the typical outdoor eating spots with bright colored shade umbrellas.  There are a number of thrift shops that we visit which is one of our favorite things to do.  These bright orange umbrellas caught my eye!  This is so Southern!!!  The day was incredibly hot and the sun was very bright.  I think that this image captures the feeling of the day.

About 2 years ago I promised a young woman from church that I would paint her children.  It has taken me this long to get up courage enough to tackle the image.  I am pleased with it and stand by it.  A slogan taken from my friend Jo MacKenzie!!   HA

On our recent trip to Augusta Georgia my husband and I ate at a small restaurant that we like. My husband caught these shots of the workers cooking meals. This is to be the first painting out of 3 of the same image. I will try and reduce the number of paint strokes by have in each of the 2 remaining. I painted over a canvas that I had erroneously applied white to as a cover and so everything looks washed out. Lesson learned. The painting is 8"x10" on a stretched canvas.

This is a photograph that my husband took while kayaking in one of the salt marshes surrounding our home.  What fun it was to paint.  It is small....only 5"x 7" on hot press watercolor paper.

  This 7"x 5" oil painting is painted on a Raymar canvas panel.  The image was one that my husband shot for me in downtown Savannah last summer.  I loved the dappled sidewalk and the large oak trees that draped across the sidewalks.
