Grapefruit and Red Vase

This painting was painted using my new shadow box set up. I think it has made a big difference!

With this painting I wanted a warm background and primed the canvas board first with red which I rubbed down to a thin coating. I have found out that Alizarin Crimson is not a very permanent color, but there is an Alizarin Crimson Permanent made that holds up much better. I didn't use that in in this painting because I am trying to use up the paint that I have open!
I wanted to lead the eye into the painting with the spoon handle and then 'S' curve through the painting to the upper left hand corner.
My goal in this painting was to control the light which the shadow box helped with. I am working to keep colors pure and clean and crisp.

I reall like this, Linda! The reflections in the spoon and the light on the grapefruit are very nice. Thanks for sharing your process, too. I always learn from you. Your shadow box does seem to make a difference. Well done!!

Lovely colors Linda. Your S curve works really well along with the spoon to lead your eye through the painting.

Your colors are rich and gorgeous in this piece, Linda. And the reflections in the glass vase are especially beautiful. Bravo to you for creating the still life box. Happy New Year!
Seems to have worked well... How did you set up the drape inside the box??
Whatever you did, it turned out nicely.
Beautiful and fresh!!!

Such a creative work and the composition is very beautiful. I like the smoothness in spoon. Keep it up!
I want to ditto all the above comments and add a big WOW! Love the color of the grapefruit flesh. All so nice. Like your persimmon in earlier post too. Thanks for telling me a bit about them too.
I use a shadow box for my still lifes too. Mine is wooden and is 3 sided. I can barely paint still life without it.
Good luck with all!
Really enjoyed visiting your blog . . . love your loose style and the fluidity of your strokes and vibrant color! Wonderful painting!
