I decided that I needed to get down to basics again. It seems that I have a tendency to rush a painting rather than taking plenty of time to do a very good drawing before beginning. Then to proceed with thought and care. In this painting I worked out a nice drawing before I laid brush to canvas. It was quite difficult for me but I learned a great deal. There are some major problems with the painting but I was afraid of losing it. I will try again and correct what I felt I did wrong. I took photos of the drawing and then erased them from my camera. Next time I will show the entire process.

Eggplants are a beautiful vegetable and these tiny italian eggplants are no exception. I also bought this gorgeous glass plate at TJMaxx! It is a beauty and casts beautiful shadows to work from.

Pop Bottle Candies

When I was a little girl I remember getting these wax pop bottle candies...only I remember that they were held in a tiny cardboard pop container like the large bottles of pop. I used to love to drink the sugar water and then chew the wax. When I saw these in the grocery store all of those memories of hot, dusty, Wyoming summer days flooded my mind. It was oh so simple then and so pleasurable.

Voting day here in SC....I was so excited to cast my ballot!!

I decided to try the painting again only smaller. This is a 6"X4" study that I did in less than 30 minutes. I wanted to keep it fresh.

Well, I have reclaimed my studio and it feels really good to be back. While thumbing through old photos that I had taken on our trip to Yellowstone Park, I came across a number of them that I wanted to paint. This is the first in a series.

My absence has not been invain. I have had much to do with the holidays as I am sure we all have. But more importantly I have been evaluating and re-evaluating my painting and beginning the process of exploration and hopefully improvement. There has always been something that bothered me about my painting and that was the lack of modulation of color. I recently purchased a DVD by a woman whose work I admire. She is a really fine painter and colorist. Her name is Camille Przewodek. Now I feel armed with the knowledge that will lead me eventually to where I want to be with my painting. I have a long way to go, but that is the journey.
This painting was one that I had been working on and it is always difficult to go back into a painting and try to do something structually that should have been in place at the beginning of the painting process. I feel that I made improvements none-the-less.
Now I begin a new and wonderful adventure.

I am still working with transparency. I was pleased with this set up and the way that it turned out. It was tricky getting the ribbon to curl properly with the correct values. For some reason the yellow is not photographing well. It is more washed out than it actually is. I will try and locate a spot that maintains the integrity of the color and photograph again.

Now this was difficult to do. Painting a glass figurine poses all kinds of problems.
I think that the most difficult is finding a background of the right value that shows off the glass. It was great practice.

I have hung in on this painting and now I am pleased with the results. It was very difficult and I learned sooo much. Don't give up until it suits you is the first thing I learned!

I wasn't satisfied with the painting yesterday and did another painting from the same subject. I am much more pleased with the results. I have a tendency to load on the paint when not when I am not thinking intently about my strokes. I also tried to use less strokes and make them count.

Gray is an interesting color to work with. I set up a challenge for myself by having a white cup set against a white piece of fabric. I worked very hard on stretching my values in gray and still keeping the white cup reading white against a white background.

My grandmother's velvet shawl was the inspiration for this painting. It is a shawl that my Uncle brought back with him from Japan. When I was a little girl my greatest honor was to wear it when I went to a movie. It probably looked ridiculous because it is quite long...but I felt like a princess!

This was one of those wonderful experiences where the paint just fell off the brush. I love the black plums when they come into season. Everytime I paint them I am reminded of a black plum tart that an old German lady used to make and share with me. I never did get the recipe and wish that I had. This was a nice set up to work from. I chose a larger format and enjoyed the increase in size. With this painting I did an underpainting and was careful to plan more fully. I determined the key that I wanted the painting and worked my color from there. In particular, I enjoyed painting the flowers and the pattern on the background paper.

Finding this cherry with the leaf attached was a little like finding a four leaf clover! I like the way that the stems intertwined with one another. I switched to natural bristle brushes and, "Oh my, what a difference! I chose quality naturlal bristle brushes and they glide so beautifully. The synthetic brushes don't have nearly the drag and they scoop rather than laying down the paint. This is a major break through for me!

Yes, my Vaseline Vase is making another debut. I just can't get enough of this vase! I love the apple yellow green color and the way the light hits it. I chose to work with a little different color scheme and am pleased with it.

I photographed the painting again and was able to come very close to the original image in terms of color.

I had fun with this painting. The experimental beginning included ink drawings to find the composition that was most interesting, and then working the design to establish a light dark pattern. After all of these details were worked out I then began to paint. It was a lot of fun and I felt that I acheived a better palette and a more cohesive composition.

I bought a set of these great mid century glasses in a variety of different colors. Each glass has a floral graphic design on it. The silk Iris was one that I had in my stash of still life material. These apples really are as big as they look.
I wanted to work with transparency and color. I feel that I acheived my goals in this painting. When I was done there was just a nice harmony between the colors and shapes.

I set this still life up in my studio with controlled lighting. It is an interesting subject, the still life, and I have been studying and looking at many works of art. Grouping and balance seem to be a key ingredient of a good still life. Is it the lighting, the color, or the narrative that makes one stand out? I have looked at many where the objects themselves do not necessarily inspire me, but the way that the artist brings a bit of himself or herself to the painting.

I am attracted to early photographs of women from the 19th century. I have a number of photos that I purchased on Etsy to work from. This is a very small paper cut painting and has intricate tiny pieces. I found it difficult to cut the smallest pieces and may need to use a magnifying glass to perfect the shapes. But all in all, I was pleased with how she turned out. This lovely young girl has a beautiful roundish face with gorgeous dark brown hair.

After a few days off from painting and much needed time to reflect and fill myself up again spiritually; I painted this little vibrant painting. I found these lilies at the grocery store and when I placed them in the vase I detected the most wonderful scent. They are elegant and beautiful in color. This time I didn't strugle with the colors used in the painting because I did a preliminary abstract color study and then translated that into the painting. It worked out very well and I didn't muddy the paint.

My Daylilies are just about done blooming. They have been exceptionally pretty this year. It may be because of the cold cold winter that we had here in the South. I bought this beautiful little Vaseline glass vase on Etsy last week and was so excited to paint it. The color is even more vivid in natural sunlight, but, my studio has eaves which prevent much light from coming into the studio. So, I painted from ambient light during mid morning. I did a preliminary sketch which you will see below before I began painting. It helps me with the composition. I did change it somewhat because of the way that the painting progressed.

After a much needed break I am back in the studio and painting. My Asters are just beginning to slow down their peek blooming season and there are a few of them left. They are a lovely lavender color with white feathery tips that blow in the breeze. I have noticed an abundance of bees this year buzzing among them. Included in this painting are a small aqua glass vase and a few of my cobalt blue bottles. I included sliced oranges to compliment the blues in the painting. I did a preliminary drawing or quick sketch to determine the layout before I began painting.

I appologize for the slight amount of glare on the photo. I am trying to find a position to photograph my paintings and the sun is shifting making the place that I normally photograph unacceptable. I will try and rephotograph.
These begonias are ready to be planted by I love the look of them in the little black plastic growing containter. The orange slices were added to capture the luscious rays of the sun as they passed through the transluscent flesh. Whil in Connecticut I found the nicest 1940's tablecoth with a cute vibrant design and this is what is placed under the still life. You can actually only see the few blue sqares of blue design in the upper right hand corner of the painting. It is as much about what you leave out as what you leave in a painting.

Classic Preparation

This is the kind of preparation that is common in my kitchen. I loved this polka dot fabric the moment I saw it and thought that it would make a perfect backdrop for my stuff! My blender is my trusty sidekick. I love making smoothies with lots of ice; they are almost ice cones when I am finished. The great little rolling pin I found in my favorite thrift store here in Beaufort. The handles are what attracted me to it. I'm not sure what I am mixing up here, but, the eggs seemed appropriate.

The sun was playing hide and seek with me all day and to dispel the moody blues that I was experiencing I took brush in hand and painted this lovely bowl of pink Rananunculus. My garden bloomed with these beauties in an abundant variety of colors this Spring. It was so joyful and I loved watching them open to a seemingly unending opening of luscious layers.

Loved working with this cheerful palette! The mums are in full force in my garden and I love it! The little glass dog in the right hand side of the painting is an Etsy aquisition. It is vintage and held small candies back in the day. The candies are long gone, but, the chain around his neck is still intact. I just loved the shapes of color in the glass.

The compressed space in this painting is full of activity making this painting energetic and colorful. I worked all day long on a painting only to wipe it out and start again. This painting fell together fairly quickly after the labor intensive failure. There was a ground of red as the underpainting which adds a warm glow.

When I bought this bottle of rice vinegar I was mesmerized by the color of the vinegar and knew that I needed to paint it. It took some time setting up a still life that would incorporate the beautifully shaped bottle. The swatch of cloth that used is a brilliant cool yellow that has great reflective qualities. I wanted to capture some of the interplay of colors that were thrown from the objects on to the cloth.

For Mother's Day

I have been busy painting these ity bitty paintings as a gift for my Mother-in-Law. They are so small and I haven't painted this small that I can think of. They range in size from 1 5/8 inch, 2 X 1/2 inch to 3X 2 1/2 inch. Whew! So I will paint tonight and get something new on for tomorrow. This project just took time.
